A messenger named Kemal brings a letter to the Queen mother and in the Harem he notices a beautiful girl called Çeşmidil. This developes into a reciprocal passion and Çeşmidil decides to escape and she wants to stop Çeşmidil to do something that will endanger her life but Çeşmidil will not listen to her.
On the otherhand, the Chief Eunuch Sümbül is secretly in love with Gülbeden. (It is a historical fact that the Chief Eunuchs in Harem might fall in love in platonic or other ways with females whom they are in charge of protecting from men contact.) He does not wish at all that marvellous Gülbeden comes to the attention of Sultan. Alas, one day the Sultan sees her and is no longer indifferent to her beauty.
The Queen mother does not like the interest of the Sultan in Gülbeden, as she thinks that Gülbeden is a little intelligent and that their unity may prove dangerous for her ambitions. She sees to it that the Janissaries are provoked to rebel against the Sultan.
The Sultan orders the Chief Eunuch that Gülbeden is prepared and presented to him. Chief Eunuch Sümbül Agha is obliged to obey the imperial order.
We see Kemal and Çeşmidil in Kanlıca. Çeşmidil is uneasy about the fate of Gülbeden and would like to go back. But when she arrives in the Harem she finds out that the Queenmother is furious and wants to expel her from the Palace most definetly. She should be only grateful that her punishment will not be more severe than this. |
